Shinai: What to Look for When Purchasing One
The majority of shinai on the market today are constructed out of bamboo and leather, though some more expensive ones are made out of carbon graphite. Shinai are available in two sizes, 38 and 39 . They also weigh a certain amount. For men, shinai are supposed to weigh at least 500grams, while for women, it should weigh at least 420 grams.
Before purchasing a shinai for Kendo, make sure to examine each part of the practice weapon carefully.
The Bamboo Strips
The blade part of the shinai is constructed out of bamboo strips or staves. Check these bamboo strips for any damage; if any are cracked, splintered, or chipped, you should not purchase the shinai. Also, if any have sharp edges, they should be sanded down before using to prevent damage to your opponent or their protective gear. Each strip should also have been treated by oil, rather than lacquer, so that they can be flexbile.
The Tip of the Shinai
Look carefully at the tip of the shinai, where all of the bamboo strips come together and are covered in the sakigawa (a small piece of leather that is wrapped around the end of the shinai). Make sure the bamboo is bound together well. If they are not, they will not resist the force of your strike and fall apart easily.
Hold the shinai in your hands. It should feel a little heavy, with most of the weight in the tsuba area.
Finally, when purchasing a shinai, make sure that you have a bag to store it in.
