The Martial Art Weapon, the Kama
The Kama is martial arts weapon typically used in styles of Karate, particularly originating in the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. They are designed to be used in pairs, one held in each hand, and is considered one of the essential weapons of the martial art.
Kama are constructed out of a short wooden pole with a sharp blade attached at the end. Its shape is similar to the scythe, and as a martial arts weapon, it is lethal when used by an experienced practitioner.

What the Kama is used for
The original purpose of the Kama was to harvest crops, particularly rice, and to cut grass. The Kama became an important implement in Japanese farming culture when rice was cultivated in the country, most likely during the Jomon Period around 300BC. Kama are believed to have been tools introduced by the Chinese (perhaps through the Koreans), secretly serving a dual purpose when weapons were outlawed during the annexation of the island.
As a martial arts weapon, the Kama is used by practitioners for close range fighting. It can slash and stab opponents, as well as to block and deflect their attacks. Weapons held by opponents can be hooked away to either break them or free them from grip.
There are various types of kama that exist. One popular type used by Ninjas was the kusari-kama. The kusari-kama features a chain that is attached at the butt of the handle. The chain is used to string enemies up to facilitate their elimination, and as a result, can also be used for long distance fighting.
