Sambo

Sambo is a self defence system that focuses on empty handed combat. All types of techniques and movements are utilized, including those that are for grappling combat, on the ground, throwing, kicking, punching and the application of joint locks. However, one may perceive it is as mainly wrestling. This style of martial art originated in Russia, as a combination of several types of martial arts from around the world, including Judo and Juijitsu from Japan (in fact, it was the Judo world that introduced Sambo to Japan, and the uniform top is quite similar.) and has become one of the most popular arts in the Western world for both self defence and sport. As a method of self defence, soldiers in Russia receive training in Sambo as part of their regime.
Sambo is an acronym for the Russian phrase, “Samozashchita Bez Oruzhiya”, which essentially means to self defence without weapons.
Sparring and fighting is essential in Sambo. Rules governing bouts may vary according to the organization or school holding the tournament. There are several large scale tournaments that are held around the world, with the most recognized ones held in Russia.

Uniform in Sambo

The uniform worn by Sambo practitioners consists of a pair of tight shorts to allow movement and prevent snagging, a pair of special shoes, a jacket that is similar to the worn by Judo practitioners, and a belt. Ranking signified by the colour of belt is not an original part of Sambo, but in recent times this may have changed so that it is now similar to the Japanese or Korean system.
