Tui Na


Tui Na is believed to have been developed during the Shang Dynasty (1523-1027 BCE). The Shang Dynasty was also the time when an effective writing system was developed, which was essentially pictographic. Tui Na is one of the oldest types of healing medicines in the world, and was commonly practiced by oracles during the Shang Dynasty. However, centuries later, Tui Na was practiced by more than shaman; it became a course of study at medicine school.

What is Tui Na?

Tui Na translates into “push (or poke) and grasp (or pinch)”. It is a type of therapy that focuses on the flow of chi (qi) through the body through the application of massage and pressure. Tui Na is similar to acupuncture, and targets the same points on the body but with pressure. Ointments, salves and lotions can also be used.

Practitioners may treat anyone from an early age, including infants, to the elderly.

By correcting the flow of chi (qi) through the patient’s body by Tui Na, healing is facilitated. The body is then be able to correct itself. Any type of medical condition can be treated, from ailments of the skin, vital organs, and bones to diseases that affect joints and muscles. It can also treat injuries. However, the success of treatment depends on the patient and the practitioner.

Tui Na is still commonly practiced today by millions of people in China, and around the world. It is a vital component of Traditional Chinese Medicine and some types of martial arts.
