Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a form of therapy for the body that is similar to Tui Na. However, acupuncture involves the insertion of tiny pins on specific points of the body, rather than just massage or pressure. These points are related to the flow of chi, the life force in a person’s body.
Acupuncture in Chinese History
Acupuncture has been part of Chinese medicinal tradition for thousands of years, since the Yellow Emperor in the dawn of Chinese civilization. As a result, it is quite difficult to pinpoint its exact origins. However, it is popularly believed that the practice of acupuncture experienced a revival during the illustrious Han Dynasty, which lasted from 206 BCE to 221 AD.
Acupuncture in Huang Ti Nei Ching Su Wen
The first book that documents techniques and applications of acupuncture is called Huang Ti Nei Ching Su Wen, or The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine. This text is written as a conversation between the Yellow Emperor and a physician, and is divided into two major sections. The second major section, Ling Shu, is where acupuncture and other forms of therapy are detailed. It includes philosophy and descriptions on Chinese medicine, as it was practiced over two thousand years ago. The author of the book is unknown, although some believe it was written by the Yellow Emperor.
Acupuncture is practiced in many countries around the world. It is recognized as a credible method of therapy, and many countries require practitioners to obtain a license in order to treat patients legally.
