A Brief Introduction to Iaido
Iaido is a style of martial art that is based on Japanese swordsmanship. It relies on the development of a calm and reflective mind, or zanshin in Japanese. As a result, most training takes place quietly and calmly. Movements are relatively slow but performed smoothly and not erratic, until they are performed in combat.
What is Iaido?
Developed by Hayashizaki Jinsuke, Iaido is an amalgamation of several older martial art styles of swordsmanship that existed in Japan. Their combination was to create a system that catered to surprise attacks, particularly for castle guards and watchmen.
Techniques of Iaido
The techniques of Iaido are developed to allow the practitioner to draw their sword, parry any attacker’s cuts, and cut the attacker. These three components, as well as a final cleaning of the blade before it is replaced into its sheath, are joined into a single movement, efficient, swift and deadly. Every movement must be precisely and smoothly performed, so attention to even the most minute details is vital. Perhaps it is for this reason that a calm and reflective mind is necessary.
There are several schools of Iaido. Some of the more popularly known ones include Muso Shinden Ryu, Shinkage Ryu and Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu.
