Good Tips to Remember When Using the Bo for Bojutsu
While how the bo is used may vary in the different types of martial arts that utilize it, the following is typical for the Japanese martial art, Bojutsu. Roughly translated from Japanese, Bojutsu means “the technique of the bo stick.” A bo is a long staff typically made from wood, but can sometimes be covered in metal.
When using the bo, remember that it is a weapon. One must give it the respect it deserves. The edges should be considered like the blade of a knife, and typically used in that manner. Therefore, it is best not to kick, straddle or step over the bo when using it. Again, this advice is for bojutsu. Other martial arts styles may conflict with this advice.
The practitioner should also feel the weight of the bo with their body, and not just their hands. It is almost like the bo becomes an extension of oneself. You can feel sensation through the bo through your whole body. And just like the rest of your body, the bo should be moved smoothly. Avoid erratic movement.
Since the bo is rather long, remember that momentum from even the smallest of movement can build and explode at the other end. Therefore, it is not necessary to apply excessive force, and should in fact be avoided.
