The Concept Of Qi
Qi or chi is considered the essence or basic force of our universe. It is a traditional concept that took form in China, believed to have originated in a time well before common era. The exact time of its conception is unknown, as it is quite an ancient concept.
Most countries, if not all, in Eastern Asia believe in the existence of Qi.
The Basics of the Concept Of Qi (Chi)
Qi exists everywhere, and flows through people as well. It is what gives all creatures life. InĀ humans, its highest concentration is located just above the pubic area of the lower abdomen (dandian in Chinese).
There are twelve meridians throughout the body along which Qi flows. Traditional Chinese medicine (acupuncture, tuina, etc.) as well as meditative exercises, called Qigong, exist to control and facilitate the flow of Qi to prevent disease, illness, and to promote longevity and peacefulness.
The existence of Qi is promoted by many religions practiced in China, such as Buddhism and Taoism (which is believed to have the longest history). Confucianism, deemed as more of a philosophy, also believes in the concept of Qi. In fact, Qigong exercises have been designed for specific philosophies, religions, and perspectives.
Qi unites all aspects of the universe. Many famous Chinese philosophers, including Dong Zhongshu (195-115 BCE), Cheng Hao (1032-85BCE ), and Zhu Xi (1130-1200AD), have attempted to describe Qi, but it is still an abstract concept that many in the Western world remain skeptical of, despite the proliferation and popularity of Oriental martial arts, in which the acceptance of Qi is essential.
