General Information on Jeet Kun Do
Jeet Kun Do is the way of the intercepting fist. Jeet is stopping/intercepting, Kun is the fist, and Do is the way/path. Do is used in the name of several other Oriental martial arts. A martial art style developed by Bruce Lee, it is also called JKD or Jun Fan Jeet Kun Do. Jun Fan is the Chinese name of Bruce Lee.
What Is Jeet Kun Do?
Jeet Kun Do is a martial art that is a combination of several martial art styles that Bruce Lee learned and studied during his lifetime. These include such styles as Wing Chun (which he learned as his first martial art), Western boxing, fencing, and Tae Kwon Do. It also applies techniques and movements from those martial art styles that he further developed and perfected. Therefore, all movements attempt to aspire to his beliefs of how to accurately defend one self.
Philosophy and Jeet Kun Do
Bruce Lee also applied philosphy to his martial art. Many sayings, particularly from the Tao Te Ching, were used to describe the ideal mental state of a JKD practitioner.
Combining philosophy with martial arts styles, Jeet Kun Do stresses the importance of freedom and flexibility. There is no single martial art that the individual practitioner should adhere to. The practitioner should apply what is most suitable for themselves when defending from an attack.
Bruce Lee developed this martial art in 1967, after he became dissatisfied with the martial art styles he was studying before that time.
