Body Armour (Bogu) in Kendo
The body armour in Kendo, called bogu in Japanese, consists of a helmet and 3 protectors for the body. These 3 protectors are separate pieces of the uniform for the trunk, hands and forearms, and the hips. A fourth protector is required for the shins, but worn only by Naginata practitioners.
There are different sizes of bogu; make sure to select the appropriate one for you according to your height and body build.
The Helmet of the Bogu
The helmet, also known as the men, covers both the neck and face. The entire face is covered by durable metal bars that run horizontally across, with on vertical bar extending from top to bottom in the middle. The rest of the head is covered by a material that is thick enough to protect the area from a blow of the shinai (the split bamboo sword). The helmet of the bogu is typically secured into place by laces at the back of the head.
The Trunk of the Bogu
The do covers the stomach and chest, the plastic form curving slightly outward. Again, the do is also secured into place by ties.
The Hands and Forearms of the Bogu
The kote are shaped like big gloves that allow the practitioner to grip the shinai. They are normally made of good quality leather and look cumbersome.
The Hips of the Bogu
The tare covers the hips and groin area from hits, and is shaped like a belt secured by laces. It is typically made out of canvas.
