The Typical Stages of Combat in Martial Arts

During a fight, it is generally believed that there are quite distinguishable stages of combat. This is a general overview of each, without getting too technical into it. However, it is important for martial artists to be aware of each, in case they are weak in one particular stage.

The First Stage in a Martial Arts Bout

The first stage of combat during a martial arts bout is when the opponents move freely. Here, there is typically no physical contact between the opponents, although some hits may be thrown. Footwork is important here, as one will try to avoid any hits directed at them.

The Second Stage in a Martial Arts Bout

The second stage of combat is when contact is made. There may be grabbing, choking, holding, or some type of grip. What is important here is trying to maintaining one’s balance, while perhaps trying to offset the other’s. It is also important to be able to apply holds or chokes to the opponent, while trying to escape from any that are received.

In judo, the first and second stage is combined so there are actually only two stages of combat.

The Third Stage in a Martial Arts Bout

The third stage of combat in many martial arts involves the ground. Here, the opponents end up on the ground, where they fight. Fighting on the ground involves more submission holds rather than hitting (although it is of course important as well). It is vital that maintaining one’s composure and having dexterity on the ground is practiced. Most fights end up on the floor eventually.
