Foundation of Kung Fu
At Bamboo Kung Fu Academy, we teach Choy Li Fut. Developed over nearly two centuries, Choy Li Fut Kung Fu incorporates the most effective techniques from various other styles of kung fu, making it one of the most complete martial arts.
Choy Li Fut merges agile footwork with powerful arm movements, making this style of kung fu difficult to attack or defend against. Choy Li Fut is also considered by many to be the most effective martial art for engaging and defending against multiple opponents.
Our training style is a mix of hardcore old-school training and modern-day sports science, providing students with the best of both worlds. Students are taught the defensive and offensive techniques of traditional Choy Li FutKung Fu with practical application for modern combat.
To lay a strong foundation upon which the student can build, we stress the importance of learning to properly execute the fundamental movements of Choy Li Fut. These techniques are grouped in prearranged sets, called forms, which students learn and practice. Most of the techniques are performed in partner drills. Training partners take on the role of opponents, creating realistic scenarios in which students can practice newly-acquired skills.
Beginner students learn a 29-step form called Yap Moon Kuen (Enter Door Form) that contains all of the basic hand techniques and elements of the Choy Li Fut Kung Fu system.
Students advance from the foundation through the advanced levels by mastering Choy Li Fut elements. We take great pride in our commitment to graduating students to the next level based on their level of competence, not the simple ability to perform moves. This differentiates us from competitors and ensures that our students have the confidence and ability to utilize what they’ve learned in real world situations, should the need arise.
Those who commit to the practice of kung fu reap numerous mind, body and spirit benefits.
The practice of kung fu enriches the mind and provides mental clarity. Kung fu requires discipline, which enhances the ability to focus. Students learn to persevere despite challenges. Training enhances students’ ability to plan strategically for success. As skills improve, so does the student’s confidence. Through the pursuit of excellence in an environment of respect, one builds character. All of these benefits translate to students’ daily lives.
The wide range of individual Choy Li Fut movements provide a full body workout. At Bamboo Kung Fu Academy we lead students in scientifically-sound exercises, inspired by the training philosophies of elite athletes around the world. Physical benefits derived from kung fu include increased agility, weight loss, fat reduction, improved muscle tone, increased flexibility, increased strength and improved heart function and cardiovascular health.
The increased energy that results from a vigorous kung fu practice enhances mood. During practice, tension, stress and aggression are released, reducing anxiety. Performing the art of kung fu before an audience helps diminish performance anxiety, or “stage fright,” and each success builds self-esteem.
Students learn to develop a deep sense of mutual respect for the teacher and fellow students, even when they play the role of opponents while sparring. This heightened sense of respect for self and others uplifts students and improves relationships with others—in and out of class.
Bamboo Kung Fu Academy welcomes students who want to improve their mind, body and spirit through a martial arts tradition that spans the centuries.
We're not a black belt factory. However, we are heavily invested in the success of our students, on the mat and in their everyday lives. We're committed to providing students with the knowledge, skills and confidence to defend and protect themselves, should the need arise.
